NORLYZ – First Dawn On Planet B.
For the album “First Dawn On Planet B.” by the electro-acoustic live act NORLYZ, I played the synths & drums, wrote, recorded and produced the music.
On 02.06.2023 the electroacoustic band NORLYZ is going to release its debut album as limited double vinyl. With their danceable and cinematic arrangements, the 4 musicians present their very own sound: the warmth and fragility of acoustic instruments meet the precision and energy of analog synthesizers and sequencers, carried by complex, polyrhythmic drum patterns and enveloped by detailed sound design. The skillfully produced compositions create an overall dramaturgy that belongs as much to the concert hall as to the dance floor.
“First Dawn On Planet B.” lets us dive into the world of NORLYZ. Their music is inspired by techno, jazz and world music and in the more than 60 minutes journey we are drawn into and awed by mystical sceneries. The music is like a soundtrack for our imagination creating unique and unseen worlds.
Quiet and soloistic parts like the beginning of the opening track SPARKLE, the handpan solo of ELTANIN or the conversation between bass clarinet and cello in ORGAN SYMPHONY, alternate with danceable grooves that set everything in motion. It is a continuous play of contrasts in which both the fragile acoustic instruments and the driving beats can fully unfold. Everything moves forward in a continuously building tension that is just waiting to be discharged.
Just as multifaceted as the music are the backgrounds of the 4 musicians: Paul David Heckhausen as founder, producer, composer and live musician is the driving force of NORLYZ. As a drummer and pianist he comes from rock and jazz music, traveled and drummed for a year in Brazil and finally studied composition and music production in the Netherlands. After a phase as a DJ, he followed up on his urge to play more live again and to combine electronic with acoustic music. So he founded Schattenspiel, the predecessor project which is known today in a new line-up as NORLYZ.
Cellist Gábor Hartyáni comes from Hungary, lived and studied in the Netherlands, and has a penchant for groove, world music and jazz. He has been
playing with Schattenspiel since 2019. Trumpeter Philipp Püschel and saxophonist Lasse Golz met while studying jazz in Hamburg. The two play together with Paul in the space jazz band ROCKET MEN, among others, as well as regularly with the techno marching band MEUTE. Philipp and Paul know each other from their time together in a big band in Hannover.
After their live debut at the Fusion Festival 2022 and shows at the Detect Classic and feel.jazz Festival, Sisyphos Berlin and Knust Hamburg, “First Dawn On Planet B.” is the first physical longplayer of the project based in Berlin and Hamburg. Live videos of the singles DJEMBÉ and FIRST DAWN ON PLANET B. were released in 2022. Performances at Elbjazz, 3000Grad, Kimiko and Fuego a la Isla Festival are planned for 2023.
